Tree Kangaroos are seemingly forgotten marsupials which spend most of their lives in the trees of tropical rainforests. They are being pushed towards the brink of extinction due to habitat loss and poaching. People need to do all they can to help these beautiful creatures survive and flourish.

SUBMISSION: The Simple Beauty of the Orangutan by Alison Irving

The Simple Beauty of the Orangutan by Alison Irving. All Rights Reserved.

I think one of the most powerful things captured by the art4apes competition is the sheer beauty of these endangered animals in their natural habitat. I wanted my piece to bring a smile to the viewer's face and elicit a sense of familiarity in the movement of the orangutan. Currently, palm oil is the largest threat to the orangutan populations. To see an orangutan happy in an environment of its own is a reminder to the pain that we inflict on them through the expansion of palm oil production. I wanted to extend beyond a still image of an orangutan; I wanted there to be a sense of freedom and personality from the orangutan. Ultimately, we hold the fate of the orangutans' future in our hands, how can we possibly let such emotion-filled animals die innocently for our own greed? This piece is a reminder of the victim of our own doing.

Art has become a new language in which I can express my feelings and convey messages that are meaningful to me.

In the past few years, I have created several oil paintings to raise awareness about endangered species.  When I initially thought about a theme for this painting, an image of a lonely jaguar hiding in its remaining territory came to mind. I hope that my efforts can make a difference in protecting wildlife.

Green sea turtles are endangered because of the garbage they get stuck in or eat. They get caught in fish nets and sometimes strangle themselves. If we don't start to realize how pollution is a danger to all creatures, then they will be all gone.

Jerboas, a nocturnal species, are endangered mainly due to human caused habitat destruction. It is quite sad that such adorable, large-eared rodents are being less seen as time goes on because of human touch on their habitats.

The Scarlet Macaw is a South American Parrot that lives in the tropical forests. Scarlet Macaws have been on and off the endangered species list due to deforestation. If humans don’t stop taking away their habitat, these colorful birds could disappear forever.
