SUBMISSION: On the Brink by Circe Wildlife Artist

Using ceramic clay I sculpt each piece as a one of a kind original. Earthen pigments bring color to my work as I mix them together like paint and fire them on to the surface of my pieces with high temperatures in a kiln. Elements of fire, air, water, and earth are combined to give life to my creations. On the Brink is one piece in a current series of ceramic sculptures I’m working on that focuses on the impact the human dominated world has upon animals. I chose to represent the issue of extinction using the concept of negative space. Black Rhinos moving rapidly toward extinction in the wild are disappearing forever from the Earth. The African landscape where rhinos were once plentiful is represented in the sculpture by an Acacia tree’s silhouette. The sculpture’s base represents the average size and shape of a black rhino horn since the poaching of their horns is the main reason they are going extinct. It is a tragedy to realize the significance of something only after it's gone.
