Cicatriz by Linda Kunik. All Rights Reserved. The land has always been a reference for me. Through my early work as a watercolorist, I painted landscapes. As my art developed in medium, so did my ideas, leading to questions combining formalism, globalization and issues concerning the environment. I began using abstraction and representation to present these issues and situations.

Deforestation deals with the topography and cartography of the land, along with the issue of deforestation in Africa, Southeast Asia and Central/South America. Deforestation has been occurring on a large-scale basis for centuries, to make room for housing developments, to harvest exotic woods for use as furniture or to clear land for cultivating certain crops or cattle raising.

While all of these endeavors have a place in a capitalistic world, they fail to recognize that we are losing one of our most important resources—the rainforest. Deforestation also destroys, on a daily basis, at least 137 species of plant and animal life.
