SUBMISSION: Intriguing Tiggy by Tuva Stephens

"Piggy" was an educational resident and mascot of the Customs House Museum Gift Show in Clarksville, Tennessee. The "diva" had her own living quarters, shower, and free run of the shop. I realized later that iguanas were an endangered species referenced as "the chicken of the trees" in Costa Rica. Eating iguanas is an ancient tradition for people in many countries. Due to iguana hunts, climate change, loss of habitat, leaf munching iguanas are in danger. It was my pleasure to photograph and paint in watercolor the essence of this intriguing species. It is nice to know that Edsart Besier, a Dutch conservationist, founded the Iguanaverde Foundation in 2001 in Costa Rica. Costa Rica now forbids hunting iguanas. Tiggy has retired and now is well-loved by a private owner associated with the museum. She can now be found on You-Tube.
