The mystique and natural beauty of Florida are the elements that inspire me to bring a canvas to life by capturing a special time of day that is magical. Painting the raw splendor and energy of Florida’s natural environment allows me as an artist to introduce the observer of my artwork to the wonderment I feel when observing God’s craftsmanship. By creating a painting of clouds, ocean, landscape, or birds unique to Florida on canvas, I can bring to life the light and inspiration that makes my work and spirit come alive with beauty, color, emotion. This passion is driven by the desire to create realistic expressions depicting the divine majesty of God’s creations often found only a short drive civilization. It is in quiet places and natural environments, away from crowds, traffic, buildings, that we find peace and inspiration in nature to restore our energy and soul. I paint this tropical paradise to bring it back home for others to savor and enjoy.

Creating original artwork has been a lifelong passion and a personal refuge. Painting gives me the opportunity to fully explore my feelings at the moment.

Do I want to be bold or subtle? Colorful or muted?

I have the freedom to go any direction, and discard the rules that I have studied and obeyed for so many years. I fully immerse myself in the process of developing that one individual work of art.

By keeping my eyes and heart really open, inspiration and beauty is often right in front of me.

My art expresses the joy and wonder I experience in my daily life. My acrylic paintings and charcoal drawings show soul-touching scenes which tell the viewer a story, bringing them into an intimate moment of the event I capture. Sharing simple, relatable moments expressed in my art allows me to deepen cherished memories and experiences. I invite viewers to be piqued by curiosity, sense positive emotions, and be reminded of less complicated times in their personal history.

Art has always been part of my life. I loved working with colored pencils as soon as I discovered them as a fine art medium. I work realistically and I like the smooth texture and fine details that can be achieved with colored pencils.

My work is inspired by nature, my travels, and the beauty I find in everyday objects.

I was inspired to draw Watchful from a photo I took of a Red Lechwe while on safari in the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Watchful was done with colored pencils and erasers on double-sided drafting film using a process called drawing by subtraction. After coating the film with a pencil wash, I began by erasing and slowly building up color layer by layer. I enjoy the process of watching my painting slowly emerge.

Primarily a colored pencil artist, I also enjoy East Asian brush painting.

Whenever possible I paint on site, including sitting on a beach with walrus, climbing an iceberg in a fjord to paint from, and painting underwater with scuba gear. I work using Transparent Watercolors, Acrylics, and Oils, depending on what I feel can best express the scene (as well as what materials I can travel with!).

Capturing these images of where I am as I am in that moment makes the artwork a part of the experience - including the sight, smell, weather, humidity and emotions experienced. I hope to share these feelings with the viewer as close to the immediacy of this experience as I can. I use a camera as well, for later exploration of the experience in the studio from my reference.

I share a portion of the sale of my pieces with several marine non-profits and National Parks to raise awareness of and care for our resources.

Continuing projects include exploring new (for me) paint colors, painting at night, and revisiting older subject matter with my current eyes.

Ayla was a tiny female orphaned vervet monkey I cared for at the Vervet Monkey Foundation in South Africa. Intelligent, enterprising, and often considered pests, vervets suffer greatly in the clash of human encroachment. Kudos to VMF for their foster mum program, pairing orphans with female adult sanctuary vervets who fully accept the babes as their own.

It was this look by this infant monkey that changed my life. Maasai, a mustached guenon (because they look like they have a milk mustache), was the first primate I ever cared for, at Ape Action Africa primate sanctuary in Cameroon. Her mother was likely killed by villagers for meat. Through Maasai, I discovered the miraculous world of monkeys and apes.

Time disappears and a creature emerges.

I find great peace in the darkness that welding provides. There is a necessity for great focus and awareness at every moment. The welding of thousands of tiny rods creates a network of animated light which gives the sculpture a spirited vibrance, developing the right line to give the creature breath and life, striking the right resonance. Then I leave off and following the sculpture’s lead, await with great anticipation this newfound expression.

We must understand our interconnectedness and responsibility to the earth - we are together in a vast web with other innumerable and necessary species. I pray we teach ourselves and our children to be both knowledgeable and vigilant stewards of our natural home.

From a photo by C. Parish/Peregrine Fund. I painted this female breeding adult for a 2022 touring exhibition for conservation called 50 USA. This piece will also be in a Society of Animal Artists show Aug-Nov 2021 at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson. Condors are critically endangered, dying mostly from lead poisoning when they eat carrion shot by hunters using lead bullets.

Feel the intensity of this jaguars emotion as he stares off, wondering what the future of his species holds.

This original oil piece on wood panel places the rare jaguar against a black backdrop, highlighting his power and bringing the viewer a sense of awe and wonder while admiring his every detail.

There are only an estimated 15,000 jaguars left in the wild, with Brazil holding the greatest population. The upper right spot, below his ear, is shaped as the country of Brazil. This brings a factual piece of information to the viewer and hopefully leaves the art appreciator a sense of conviction and urgency in the need to protect this species.

As an artist, this piece was powerful and humbling to create. I feel a sense of responsibility to share this animal and his story with the world.
