ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2021 Submission

Whenever possible I paint on-site, including sitting on a beach with walrus, climbing an iceberg in a fjord to paint from, or painting underwater with scuba gear. I work using Transparent Watercolors, Acrylics, and Oils, depending on what I feel can best express the scene (as well as what materials I can travel with!).

Capturing these images of where I am as I am in that moment makes the artwork a part of the experience - including the sight, smell, weather, humidity, and emotions experienced. I hope to share these feelings with the viewer - to the immediacy of this experience. I use a camera as well, for later exploration of the experience in the studio.

I share a portion of the sale of my pieces with several marine non-profits and National Parks to raise awareness of and care for our resources.

Current projects include painting on top of and under the water.

ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2021 Submission

The painting is meant to represent the vulnerability of wildlife and nature due to the destruction that mankind has caused throughout the world with regards to deforestation and climate change. In parallel to exposing the negative impact that humankind has had on our world and nature, the painting also demonstrates how human beings also have the power to change the destruction.

The painting depicts a strong, majestic gorilla carefully placed in the palm of a semi-closed hand. The painting suggests that their future is in our hands; it is up to mankind to change, to protect, and to save the wildlife whose populations are shrinking before us. The artwork is painted from the viewers perspective as though they are looking down onto the hand holding the gorilla. The name adds to the narrative of destruction and extinction of nature and wildlife.

ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2021 Submission

I believe Art should be a combination of Creativity and Craftsmanship. My work is a combination of over 40 years of woodworking experience and a broad imagination using nature's own beauty.

I work with select driftwood found along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River. My pieces use wood that will not only meet the anatomical requirements but also have a singular natural beauty. Works are assembled to represent a variety of creatures both real and mythical. Some examples are horses, lions, whales, hippocampus, herons, to name a few. All wood is cleaned, bleached, and treated with a water-based preservative allowing for interior or exterior display. Creations can be small 16" high to life-size stallions.

ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2021 Submission

Art has always been part of my life. I loved working with colored pencils as soon as I discovered them as a fine art medium. I work realistically, and I like the smooth texture and fine details that can be achieved with colored pencils.

My work is inspired by nature, my travels, and the beauty I find in everyday objects. My reference for Contemplation was a leopard I observed while on safari in Botswana. She was so impressive; I had to draw her. This piece is part of a series of colored pencil paintings I did after my trip to Africa.

Contemplation was done with colored pencils and erasers on double-sided drafting film using a process called drawing by subtraction. After coating the film with a pencil wash, I began by erasing and slowly building up color layer by layer. I enjoy the process of watching my painting slowly emerge.

Primarily a colored pencil artist, I also enjoy East Asian brush painting.

My name is Pablo Matute, I am 21 years old from Hallandale Florida and I am an artist, using mediums such as oil, acrylic, charcoal, ink and pastel. I grew up pretty isolated mainly by my own choosing, I was very nervous around people so the way I expressed myself was doing my drawings and sculptures. I’ve been drawing from a very early age but never wanted to pursue it as a career. I was often told by my art teachers in middle and high school that the type of art that I was doing wouldn’t be respected unless I was doing landscapes or photo realistic portraits my career as an artist would be doomed. It was only during my second year of college where I attended a beginners art class and met with my mentor John Selburg, who is a surrealist, as am I, he does these amazing giant charcoal drawings and it totally blew me away, the level of creativity that he has it’s just mind boggling and it’s what ultimately led me to rekindle my love for art.

After going extinct in Alaska in the late 1800s 22 Muskoxen were taken from Greenland in 1935 and reintroduced to the Alaskan tundra to repopulate. The Brown Swiss represents the cruelty that surrounds the dairy industry--with the second highest milk yield with over 20 000 lb per annum.

The rarest species of wolf in world almost went extinct back in the 1970s. In 1998 the FWS released 11 back into the wild in Arizona. Because of this this species is slowly growing in numbers. The Siberian Husky is meant to represent the cruelty surrounding the 1 100 mi Iditarod in Alaska.
