ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2021 Submission

Donkeys have been loyal beasts of burden for humans for 5,000 years greatly contributing to the development of many nations by working laborious  tasks. Highly intelligent, donkeys are emotional animals who bond for life, and will mourn the loss of a companion. Like so many animals exploited by humans their existence has been fraught with abuse, slaughter, neglect, and abandonment.  In United States wild burro herds sadly are considered a nuisance. It is estimated the ejiao industry wants 4.8 million skins annually. The Chinese industry is killing donkeys worldwide. Their own herd populations have been reduced from 11 million in 1992 to 2.6 million now, placing unprecedented pressure on donkey populations globally and wiping donkeys out in some nations. The torture is unimaginable for these sweet sensitive animals. All this weighs heavily on my heart.

ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2021 Submission

The goal of my paintings is to grab the attention of viewer & draw them in to look at the details; to step in & take a closer look. I strive to cause the viewer to desire to walk into the scene; to touch the subject, whether an animal, a bird or a piece of fabric. I hope, as you view my paintings, you hear the birds singing, the lion roaring, or the cat purring and it brings a smile to your face. I want you surrounded by feelings of beauty, peace & awe that cause praise & thanksgiving to God.

Irina Grammatina began her painting career at the age of 6 and continued painting through 19 years of art schools in St. Petersburg Russia, graduating with a masters degree from the prestigious Mukhina University. She continued her professional career selling her work in Europe and Scandinavia and moved to the US in 1994. In recent years she has exhibited her work at the LA Art Fair, Art Palm Beach, New York Art Expo and other venues. Her work is in several prestigious private collections. I have studied people and animals all of my life, and paint portraits of people and animals, both domestic and wild. I studied at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I use many mediums, oil paint, acrylic, pen and ink , graphite, and pastels. I am currently focused on painting with oils. By carefully observing the behaviour and habits of animals and people I try to render accurate depictions of each so as to capture the essence of each.

I paint in acrylic, mostly nature based subject matter, aiming to bring awareness to the need to protect and preserve threatened and endangered species and their ever decreasing habitats and highlighting The Everglades. I'm drawn to color, flow and movement in my artwork and try to evoke a feeling/emotion, showing my love of nature and incorporating some life experiences living in Ireland and Florida.

The natural peaceful beauty that surrounds us is my inspiration - some scenes are so breathtaking, they just call to be painted and what better tribute than to capture a moment in time with brush strokes on canvas, to view forever. I have experienced many cultures and sights, having traveled extensively, and may explore this in future paintings. I admire the wonderful paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe and James Stroud.

ENDANGERED: Fine Art & Photography Contest 2021 Submission

Most of all I want my work to be emotional; to spirit a reflection, a change, and to confront the routinely accepted cruel practices perpetrated on animals by humans either directly or from afar.

What Price Beauty specifically protests Rabbits and other small animals used for cosmetic testing; most of which is repetitive and unnecessary, but it occurred to me I can replace the Rabbit in this image with almost any animal on the planet that has been touched in some way by humans in every industry and arena; hunting, poaching, fishing, food industry, entertainment, cultural festivals, contests, medical laboratories, the commercial pet industry, shelters systems, government control agencies, the armed forces, organized animal fighting, social media; publicized cruelty videos, endangered species, and extinction.

Professions of admiration and love for animals is not enough; what is needed is protest and challenge, an end to the acceptance of cruelty toward them. We are all animals.

I remain an optimist though environmental awareness and our human footprint are sadly incongruous. Even though we are barraged by images daily to get the world to focus on this fact it may only create a like on our Instagram accounts. But these images and words do suspend the viewer for that instant creating a better collective culture. As a fine artist and a digital illustrator I feel it is my responsibility to try and go beyond that moment to motivate people to action. With our collective power I am hoping we can create the necessary motivation to unite and save life on our planet as well as our own.
