HKM Jewelry is a brand of heirlooms for ocean lovers who strive to protect our seas. Each piece is handmade by Hali MacLaren using traditional techniques and recycled fine metals. Sea shells from the Atlantic are molded and cast into durable replicas for charms. Unique found objects like stones, shell shards and sea glass are set like gems to create one of a kind, sea creature jewelry.

I create handmade jewelry that is inspired by the sea, to spread awareness about its importance and beauty. Each piece is uniquely created and designed to last for generations. Growing up, I spent every summer in the water and sands of the Jersey coast. My collection of shells and other sea treasures is extensive, taking up almost every inch of space in my studio. In silver I fabricate, carve and cast using traditional metalsmithing techniques using found objects from the Atlantic shoreline as embellishments or cast elements.

My Goal, as an artist, is to create stories without words, hopefully with happy endings. I try to inject positive vibes into my paintings. When figures are included my aim is to arouse feelings and emotions and, when possible, a sense of humor.

I use the whole canvas preferring tight compositions with good drawing. Detail is suggested in a painterly fashion letting the viewers imagination complete the picture. My paintings typically have a strong light source with depth and perspective. The end result is a 'wish you were here' feeling.

My work speaks to those who wander, who don’t belong. My battles with cancer as a young adult warned me that my time should not be spent trying to fit in, but learning to embrace the strangest parts of myself, including the monsters and demons. This struggle is found in each of my pieces: the corruption of realism with the surreal; the distortion of the physical world by our metaphysical imaginations. I believe that seeking to understand this internal dialogue is critical to a healthy life. Dozens of paintings later, I’m pleased to report that I’ve been in remission for 5 years. Hopefully, beholders will use my paintings and sculptures as prompts for their own self-discovery. Our journey has begun.

Moments frozen in time from shared experiences speak to the universality of emotion and connect us. We are all vulnerable in some way: an uncomfortable feeling, yet an important one that allows us to grow.

Art captures history, the essence of humanity and lays bare injustices to inspire positive change. As in life, sometimes the negative space of something not being there speaks volumes.

It is a tightrope, delicate dance to harness clarity of thought and compassion with the power of self-reflection, but only through acknowledgement and acceptance of others’ struggles can humanity take steps toward unity and a more equitable future.

Sculpture challenges structure figuratively and literally, and also scientifically—through research of anatomy and écorché modeling, testing the boundaries of physics with form and balance.

The wellspring of creativity sparks innovation from art to science, & hopefully beyond to ensure a more equitable & just world.

I try to breathe life into clay. To imbue it with feelings or just to capture moments in time. To massage the mundane with magic so that it reveals the wonder within.

The characters I sculpt can be human or animal, but each of them tells a story. As you view them from different angles, the fullness of those stories emerges, not only from their shapes, but from their textures and colors as well.

I love creating something new each time. What a challenge it is to convey elusive emotions via natural facial expressions! Or to figure out accurate anatomical proportions as each character emerges from a mound of lifeless mud!

I regularly use cold finishes and add whatever other materials are necessary to complete the character image. I do not feel bound by any traditions of the trade.

My goal is to let something in each character stir something inside each viewer: a fleeting emotion, a tender memory, or a lasting insight about life. Something to renew your spirit and nourish your soul.

As a small child, a favorite hideaway of mine was a large vernal pool hosting countless species of enduring fascination. The surrounding area was teaming with life - the perfect place for an inquisitive young child to drink deeply the endless curiosities of the natural world. One day, I went to visit my eden, and found it bulldozed to the ground. Trees leveled, wetland filled in with gravel, the entire area devoid of life. This heart-wrenching experience fostered in me a deep relationship with life, death, destruction of habitats, and extinction. As I grew, I learned that narratives just like this play out conglomerately each and every day. It is said that the artist's job is to record their time in history, and I am no exception, for the narratives in my work are that which I continuously play witness to. As an artist, my aim is to shed light upon our collective impact on the natural world, hopefully to inspire whatever it takes for our kind to enact change, before it's too late.

Creating art has always been part of my life. Animal and human forms are often the center of my work, and the abstract elements of art are just as important to me as any subject matter I may be portraying. I strive to make pieces that have a timeless quality, contain strong aesthetics, and are a mystery for the viewer. Realism can be part of my sculptures and it is often blended with other forms to create an interesting, thought provoking image. I love the idea of a relic from another time or place and the magic of things unknown. It is a purposeful twist that some of my pieces are made to look futuristic, and appear as a relic from the past at the same time. The exciting thing for me is the evolution of my work over the years. New themes and motifs arise, past ideas resurface in new ways, and the relationship with the materials grows richer and the images more personal.

My current series is based on Alberta wildlife. I am always thrilled to have the opportunity to observe nature in the wild. I have been taking photos of wolves and foxes and their habitats where possible, but they are elusive. I am very concerned that that, under the Trump administration, the Timber Wolf lost their Endangered Species Act protection and in March of 2021, 216 Timber Wolves were killed in 3 hours in Wisconsin alone.

I have loved to draw and paint for as long as I can remember. I earned a degree in art but hung up my paintbrush to raise a house full of kids, fortunately I rediscovered my passion and happy place while recuperating from hip surgery. I was introduced to pastels a couple years ago and have immersed myself in this amazing medium.

My oils, though often based on the recognizable, share a deeper, ""off to the side"" look at life than the purely representational. I try to tap into and convey life's undertows which, to me, are the unspoken, unseen energies that bring close and bind artists and their viewers. From the beauty of agricultural fields and barns; of bodies of water and their islands and shores; of the forms and eyes of animals, wild and domestic; of the human form; of our architecture--the constant conversing of light and shading and coloration that lets us see these things is what I always try to convey.

Sheryl Massaro holds an MFA in Creative Writing from The American University and studied with several key poets, including Allen Ginsberg, Stanley Kunitz, W.S. Merwin, and others. She has had residencies at Yaddo (New York) and St. Peter’s (Canada) colonies. She also is an oil painter and photographer, and currentl is an Artist in Residence at The Griffin Art Center, Frederick, MD
