In this animal project, we are talking about endangered and threatened species that are having a hard time living in the wild. The cause of this is that animals are suffering from the lumberjack people in the forest, causing them to lose shelter, the loss of water by people using for farms, drinking water, agriculture and for dumping in the ocean for flood control and poaching by people killing animals for food and selling them to zoos. Our class has gathered information by using endangered species such as the Florida Panther or the songbirds and other types of plants and animals.

Silver Back Gorillas are phenomenal animals that are at risk of being extinct. They are being hunted and killed by poachers they are losing their homes in the wild due to habitat destruction and clearing forests for agriculture and setting charcoal. If something is not done, these amazing gorillas will no longer exist.

Red pandas are a species native to southwestern China and eastern Himalayas. They have been on the endangered animals list since 2008 due to having less than 10,000 mature individuals. The primary causes to its declining population are the loss of habitat, hunting, and poaching. They have a low birth rate and the highest death rate in the world. I learned a lot about red pandas while working on this painting. I first chose to paint the red panda because they seemed cute and playful, but later, I wanted to bring more awareness to them. I feel like they are overshadowed by the Giant pandas and I think many people are not aware of their declining population and endangered status.

Through this apprenticeship I am learning the skills necessary to be a jeweler such as soldering, waxing, casting, and stone setting. This piece showcases my exploration of many of these techniques.

The Philippine Eagle (aka the monkey eating eagle) is the national bird of the country I was born from. With a population of only about a few hundred, these birds are still threatened by deforestation and urbanization. I wish for people to see that these birds are beautiful and must be further protected. The title means ‘The Eagle’ in Tagelos, the language of the Philippines.

The Simple Beauty of the Orangutan by Alison Irving. All Rights Reserved.
I think one of the most powerful things captured by the art4apes competition is the sheer beauty of these endangered animals in their natural habitat. I wanted my piece to bring a smile to the viewer's face and elicit a sense of familiarity in the movement of the orangutan. Currently, palm oil is the largest threat to the orangutan populations. To see an orangutan happy in an environment of its own is a reminder to the pain that we inflict on them through the expansion of palm oil production. I wanted to extend beyond a still image of an orangutan; I wanted there to be a sense of freedom and personality from the orangutan. Ultimately, we hold the fate of the orangutans' future in our hands, how can we possibly let such emotion-filled animals die innocently for our own greed? This piece is a reminder of the victim of our own doing.
