Bosque Great Egret by Bud Root-Michels. All Rights Reserved.

As a young man growing up in Michigan and Colorado, I was passionately drawn to be outside in the beauty and rawness of nature.   Rocks, rushing water, wind, rain, tornadoes, mountains, skies, camping, birds, fish, and wild animals were my world.  Later when I started my own family, I got a pilot's license before moving to a mountain wilderness 20 miles south of Anchorage, Alaska.   I built our cabin there totally off the grid.   For eleven years, I witnessed the seasons fill the overhead skies with migratory birds.

As an illustrator, my clients made it possible for me to spend many seasons in the arctic over 20 years.  There, I observed nesting birds as they rounded up their kind in the fall before starting their journey south.  I too would fly south to my cabin and family in the woods.

In New Mexico I live among trees, open fields, mountain vistas and numerous birds.
