As we modify organisms we reshape and re-imagine the natural world, affecting even microscopic deep sea creatures such as the ones Ernst Haeckel recorded via his illustrations in 1862. If we sample the waters in the Strait of Messina today, would we find the same exact deep water creatures, or in the last 150 years have they been modified as a side effect of industrialization?
Garnets are natures scaffolding between three human created silver layers in this 3D recreation of an inspirational Haeckel drawing. Hand fabricated via recycled sterling silver and joined with industrially produced stainless steel bolts and nuts. One side of the reversible pendant reveals crowns of the natural garnets; the second side represents natures subversion.
